Springfield, MO – The Leisurette’s, a vibrant social club with a rich history, continues to thrive in Springfield, Missouri. Founded on April 9, 1988, the club emerged from the legacy of the Leisure Hour Club, established in 1951.
Inspired by the enduring spirit of friendship fostered by the Leisure Hour Club, a group of women came together to form a new social organization that would include their children and friends. Charter members: President, Deborah Bedell, Lynnette Buckner, Kaye Green, Linda Brown, Connie Rudd, Lonzetta Graves, Kim Killer. Voted in were Sheryl Looney, Patricia Burton, Deborah Jamerson, Christie Heard, Lois Blakley, and Wilma Pellicco.
During a meeting, club founders were honored to hear a brief history of the Leisure Hour Club from Mrs. Alberta Duncan, Leona Starks, and Mrs. Rosetta Clarida. These women, who had been part of the original club for 37 years, shared their experiences and passed on the torch of friendship and community service.
The Leisurette’s adopted the inspiring motto of their predecessors: “Striving to Be Good Friends.” This guiding principle has shaped and guided it membership for over three decades.
Over the years, the Leisurette’s membership has evolved, with new members joining and others moving on. Despite these changes, the club’s core values of friendship and community service have remained steadfast. Today, the club consists of nine dedicated members, including recent additions Ra-Chelle Johnson, Stephanie Mosley, and Pat Johnson.
As a non-profit organization, the Leisurette’s gather monthly at members’ homes for fellowship, business discussions, card games, and other social activities. These gatherings provide opportunities for laughter, shared experiences, and strengthening bonds.
Beyond their social activities, the Leisurette’s actively engage in community service. They organize various events, including yard sales, talent shows, and fashion shows, to raise funds for charitable causes. The club is proud to support organizations such as the Springfield Reunion Committee, United Way, and cancer research initiatives.
One of the club’s most cherished traditions is the crowning of the Queen of the Leisurette’s. Longtime member Tameka Bedell has held this honor for many years, exemplifying the club’s commitment to recognizing and celebrating its members.
Over the years, the Leisurette’s have annually hosted holiday events for the community. As one of the oldest social clubs in Springfield they along with their mother’s club the Leisure Hour Club have existed for a remarkable 74 years.
