  • First-place winning designs will be printed on full-color bookmarks and distributed at the libraries and community events throughout the year.
  • Winning entries for each age category will be printed for distribution, the winner will get a certificate and a gift card to Hobby Lobby. Bookmarks will also be revealed on the Library’s web page at thelibrary.org/bookmarks.

Celebrating Black Brilliance Storytimes
Bring your little ones to special Racing to Read Storytimes focusing on books by Black authors and illustrators. Storytimes for infants-age 6 start Feb. 4 across the district. To see the location and times, pick up a copy of Bookends at your local library or visit thelibrary.org/programs and search by “Black Brilliance.”

The Great Backyard Bird Count
Become a community scientist and join people worldwide in the Great Backyard Bird Count! Visit birdcount.org to learn how to identify and record the birds you observe. Between February 14-17, spend at least 15 minutes birdwatching and submit your findings. Your contributions help scientists track migration patterns, monitor year-to-year changes, and uncover long-term trends. This event is organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada.

The Great Backyard Bird Count with the Dickerson Park Zoo continues at the Library.
Join us at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, at the Republic Branch Library. Meet three ambassador birds from the Dickerson Park Zoo’s education department who will demonstrate avian characteristics in an up close and hands-on encounter. Then, enjoy bird-themed activities and practice bird counting with a bird scavenger hunt in the library!

For more information on these and other great programs, visit thelibrary.org. Vickie Hicks is the community relations director of the Springfield-Greene County Library District. She can be reached at vickieh@thelibrary.org.
