Together Apart: ParkDay Reunion Documentary

A Powerful New Film Celebrates the History of Springfield’s African American Community

Springfield, MO – A vital piece of Springfield’s history comes to life on the big screen with the premiere of Together Apart: ParkDay Reunion Documentary. This moving 32-minute film will debut on Sunday, June 22, 2025, with showings at 3:00 PM and 4:45 PM at the Moxie Cinema, 305 S Campbell Ave #101.

Since 1972, the ParkDay Reunion Celebration has served as a cherished homecoming for Springfield’s African American community. Held annually on the first weekend of August at the historic Silver Springs Park, ParkDay is more than just a festival—it’s a living tradition. Families and friends travel from across the country to reconnect, celebrate, and honor their shared heritage through music, parades, performances, fashion shows, and a classic car show.

The origins of ParkDay trace back to an era of segregation, when Silver Springs was the only park in Springfield open to African American families. In those days, the spring-fed pool, spirited baseball games, and the irresistible aroma of barbecue brought the community together—even as they faced adversity. Generations have since grown up with ParkDay as a touchstone, returning each August to celebrate their roots and reaffirm their bonds.

Together Apart: ParkDay Reunion Documentary weaves together the memories and stories of organizers, descendants, and today’s history keepers. Through their voices, the film explores the enduring significance of Silver Springs Park and the ParkDay Reunion, capturing the spirit and resilience of a community that has always found ways to come together-no matter the distance or the times.

This documentary is the result of a unique partnership between Plotline, Timmons Hall/Springfield-Greene County Park Board, and UniteNews Magazine. The project began in 2021, with the first round of filming taking place during the summer of 2022. The team’s dedication has ensured that the film is both a celebration and a preservation of an essential chapter in Springfield’s history.
