We all know that children are curious. They like to explore big and small spaces. Typically, they aren’t concerned with being safe or cautious and telling them “don’t do that” just makes them want to try it more. Unfortunately, that means unexpected and unsafe moments can happen. One such issue is gun safety. Since firearms are now the leading cause of death among children in the United States, it’s of utmost importance for parents, family members, caregivers and the parents of your children’s friends to know how to safely store firearms and medications. Owning a gun is a personal decision, but secure firearm storage is an important part of keeping your family and others safe. One easy way to make sure we are doing it right is to “Be SMART”.
What is Be SMART?
In 2015, the Be SMART campaign was launched to promote secure gun storage and responsible gun ownership. Community Partnership of the Ozarks advocate for responsible gun ownership to reduce the number of child gun deaths and suicide by gun. Everyone can and needs to have a part in the conversation about safe gun storage. You may be a gun owner or know someone who owns a gun. The guidelines around Be SMART can aid in keeping our youth, young adults and Springfield community safe. We can help prevent access to firearms by storing them securely and encouraging others to do the same.
Here’s how to Be SMART:
Secure all guns in your home and vehicles.
Model responsible behavior around guns.
Ask about unsecured guns in other homes.
Recognize the role of guns in suicide.
Tell your peers to Be SMART.
We surveyed youth and young adults and asked how Springfield can reduce gun violence. Their top two responses were: “Parents need to teach their kids about guns and take gun safety courses” and “Parents need to be more responsible with guns, but some parents don’t care.”

Taking the time to find the best type of gun storage for your home is the gift of safety you can give to youth, young adults and loved ones in your life and for youth and young adults who visit your home.
