Bridging the Gap: Innovate SOMO Empowers Missouri’s Future

By Nicki Donnelson | efactory

In the heart of Southern Missouri, a quiet revolution is underway. A network of dedicated partners, driven by a shared vision, is rewriting the narrative of opportunity for Missourians living outside major metropolitan areas. The Southern Missouri Innovation Network, Innovate SOMO, born from a collective recognition of redundant efforts and glaring gaps in statewide programming, is forging a new path. This one is paved with accessible skills development, entrepreneurial support and strategic growth opportunities.

For too long, the promise of a thriving tech sector and robust business ecosystem felt distant for those residing beyond the state’s urban hubs. Innovate SOMO is changing that.

Through Codefi’s tech-focused programs and efactory’s business support and talent development, we’re working to make more possible for the people of our state.

In Code Labs, a full-stack web developer program, individuals are gaining the in-demand skills necessary to compete in a digital economy. Aspiring tech entrepreneurs also can find a nurturing environment through accelerator programs and access to crucial venture capital, empowering them to transform innovative ideas into viable businesses.

Meanwhile, efactory is laser-focused on cultivating talent and nurturing business growth. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by scaling businesses—those navigating the crucial transition from 10 to 100 employees—we’ve partnered with the Missouri SBDC and the Edward Lowe Foundation to offer Elevate. It provides a vital lifeline and includes virtual CEO roundtables and business experts to walk alongside as you scale.

The CEO roundtables offer a platform for peer-to-peer learning, allowing leaders to share strategies and navigate the complexities of managing a growing workforce. Then, participants also access a dedicated team of experts to provide personalized guidance, assisting with strategic planning, research and problem-solving, enabling CEOs to delegate effectively and focus on long-term vision.

For those just starting their entrepreneurial journey, the Early-Stage Business Boot Camp provides a solid foundation. The next cohort is now forming and will launch June 2, and run through June 25 on Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. This lunch-hour program offers aspiring and newly launched business owners the tools and network necessary to succeed. By addressing the fundamental principles of business development, the boot camp empowers participants to build sustainable ventures and contribute to the region’s economic vitality.

What truly sets Innovate SOMO apart is its commitment to accessibility. Thanks to generous grant funding, all programs are offered at no cost to participants. This investment in human capital is a strategic move to build a stronger, more resilient Missouri. By empowering individuals with the skills and resources they need to succeed, Innovate SOMO is advancing a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship that will benefit the entire state.

The economic rationale is clear: small businesses are the backbone of Missouri’s economy. They employ the largest segment of the workforce and are the primary drivers of new job creation. By nurturing the growth of these businesses, Innovate SOMO is not only creating opportunities for individuals but also strengthening the state’s overall economic foundation.

Innovate SOMO is more than just a network of programs: It’s a catalyst for change. By breaking down barriers and providing access to transformative opportunities, Innovate SOMO is making the impossible possible.
