DOJ Wants Sanctions On Immigrant Group For Criticizing Their Voter Fraud Claims

The Department of Justice (DOJ) doesn’t even try to convince us of voter fraud anymore; they just look at us like this. The DOJ has called on a federal court to sanction an immigrant rights group that dared to question the validity of its crusade against non-citizen voting.

AP reports that U.S. District Court Chief Judge James Boasberg allowed the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) access to federal government data on the alleged 20,000 the DOJ claims to be non-citizen voters. Boasberg provided CHIRLA access to data on the condition that they don’t publicize the names and use it only to make arguments on their legal standing to file the case.

After examining the database, CHIRLA submitted a report to the court about their findings. CHIRLA found that 40% of the names on the DOJ’s list couldn’t be found in state voter rolls. They found at least 22 people who were likely naturalized citizens, and said the list included thousands of U.S. citizens.

So of course, the DOJ didn’t like their “evidence” being called into question and said that their report has nothing to do with the legal standing of the case. Which, like, if you’re filing a lawsuit accusing people of being non-citizen voters, and analysis shows “actually, a lot of these people are citizens,” I feel like that has pretty significant impact on the legal standing of the case.

“The report’s political grandstanding about alleged inaccuracies that purportedly impact California voters generally, or comparisons between the government’s list and the full ‘California voter file,’ has no relevance to whether the particular plaintiffs in this case have standing,” the DOJ said in a court filing.

The filing asked Bosberg to refer the case to the DOJ so CHIRLA could be investigated for contempt of court.

“Plaintiffs’ counsel and their experts fully complied with the Court’s orders,” Alberto Lammers, a spokesman for the University of California, Los Angeles’ Voting Rights Project, which filed the case, told AP in a statement.

In the lead-up to tomorrow’s midterm election, the DOJ has been filing lawsuit after lawsuit targeting ballots. The Justice Department asked a California district court judge to withhold 20,000 ballots over allegations of non-citizen voting. The judge ruled against the DOJ, saying that granting their request “would wreak havoc and disrupt the election that is already underway, create a chilling effect on election workers and voters alike, and discount the votes of United States citizens.”

The Justice Department also filed a lawsuit to withhold 400 ballots in Washington state, but surprise, surprise: a Washington election official found that several U.S. citizens were on the DOJ’s list.

It’s clear that these lawsuits aren’t actually about voter fraud; it’s just about sowing doubt in the results of the midterms. What’s alarming is that if the DOJ got its way, they would’ve effectively disenfranchised U.S. citizens in several states.

It’s just incredibly sad that the Justice Department has been reduced to chasing conspiracy theories, holding water for racists, and going after Trump’s political enemies. I’m very curious how fast Trump’s loyalists are going to start jumping ship should the midterms go as poorly for Republicans as the data currently shows.
