Springfield Public Schools (SPS) is committed to the well-being of each student by providing high-quality academic opportunities. A big part of that work includes preparing students for success in an increasingly digital world—not just by providing access to devices and tools, but by teaching the values and responsibilities of digital citizenship.
Digital learning at SPS aims to ensure students become effective communicators, critical thinkers, and responsible users of technology. This focus is embedded in classroom instruction, district policies and technology planning.
What Is Digital Citizenship?
Digital citizenship refers to using technology safely, legally, ethically and responsibly. It includes protecting personal information, avoiding cyberbullying, understanding digital footprints and engaging respectfully in online communities.
At SPS, digital citizenship is taught across grade levels and subject areas. It aligns closely with the ISTE Standards for Students, particularly Standard 2: Digital Citizen, which states that students should recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world.
Curriculum Integration
Digital citizenship is not a standalone initiative; it’s a core element of the guaranteed and viable curriculum SPS provides. Educators use intentional instructional strategies to integrate responsible digital behavior into daily lessons, leveraging platforms such as Canvas, Clever, and Google Workspace to model appropriate use.
The Curriculum Management Plan adopted by SPS prioritizes student agency in digital environments and the ethical use of information and media. Lessons address:
- Evaluating digital content and sources
- Communicating with empathy and respect online
- Understanding copyrights and citing sources
- Managing screen time and online well-being
These topics are introduced early and revisited with greater complexity as students progress through school.
Tools and Support
SPS uses platforms like GoGuardian to provide real-time feedback and guidance while students work online. This helps teachers intervene when needed and also opens the door for discussions about decision-making, accountability and online reputation.
Staff receive professional development aligned with district instructional priorities and ISTE-aligned competencies, ensuring that digital citizenship is modeled and reinforced consistently.
Our Commitment
Digital citizenship is a shared responsibility among schools, families and the wider community. SPS encourages families to partner with schools to support healthy technology use.
We continuously review and plan for how to best prepare students for all facets of their future. Over the last several months, we have conducted focus groups on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to listen to how students and teachers see this technology being used and how it will impact their future in both education and their lives. This feedback will drive next steps in how SPS supports all learners in using technology ethically and responsibly.
By equipping students with these essential skills, SPS is preparing learners to succeed in a connected world—not just as users of technology, but as responsible, ethical digital citizens.
