February at the Library: Creativity, Culture, and Community

February is a time to celebrate Black history, creativity, and community—and the library is proud to be a great gathering place. Together, these programs highlight the power of stories, shared experiences, and community pride. 

Enter the Library’s 27th Annual Design-A-Bookmark Contest

Attention, kids and teens in grades K-12, our annual Design-A-Bookmark Contest starts February 1.

The deadline for entries is March 21. To participate: 

  • Pick up an entry form at any Spring-field-Greene County Library or the Mobile Library, or download one at thelibrary.org/bookmarks beginning February 1, and return it by March 21. Digital submissions can be sent to imagine@thelibrary.org. Originals of digital submissions may be requested. 
  • One winner and three runners-up will be selected in each category: Grades K-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. 
  • Winners and runners-up will be notified and receive invitations to the Bookmark Contest Reception in April.
  • First-place winning designs will be printed on full-color bookmarks and distributed at the libraries and at community events throughout the year.
  • The winners will receive a certificate and a gift card to Hobby Lobby. Winning bookmarks will also be revealed on the Library’s web page at thelibrary.org/bookmarks. 

Celebrating Black Brilliance Storytimes 

Honor Black History Month with your little ones at the Special Celebrating Black Brilliance Storytimes at all our branches. Each storytime will feature books by Black authors and illustrators. To find times and locations, visit thelibrary.org and search the programs tab for Black Brilliance.” 

Freedom Classroom 101: Community Meet & Greet 

Timmons Hall’s Freedom Classroom 101 host and Education Coordinator Christine Peoples will celebrate the next generation of creatives at a come-and-go social, featuring exhibits by Samantha Haney, an architecture student and intern with the Springfield City Manager’s Office; Rachel Kersey, managing editor-writer at Missouri State University; and Marcella Donson, freelance photographer and Hillcrest High School student. This special event will be from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, in the upstairs meeting room at the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library, 397 E. Central.
