Edgar “Rock” Hagens’ journey is one of resilience and transformation. After years of battling heroin addiction and serving a seven-year prison sentence for shoplifting, Rock has turned his life around and is now celebrating two decades of sobriety and business success in Springfield, Missouri.
Originally from St. Louis, Rock faced struggles during his early years, including drug addiction that led to criminal activity. “I was on drugs; I was a heroin addict,” Rock shared, recalling how shoplifting to support his habit resulted in a Class C felony conviction. His final incarceration stemmed from stealing a $63 jacket, but it also became the turning point in his life. While serving time, Rock participated in a long-term drug treatment program at Ozarks Correctional Center, which allowed him to confront his addiction and begin the path to recovery.
Recognizing the need for a fresh start away from the temptations of St. Louis, Rock moved to Springfield at the age of 40. Leveraging his natural talent for sales—a skill he once used to support his addiction—he opened Rock’s Hip Hop Fashion, a clothing store that has become a staple in the community.
Beyond running his business, Rock dedicates himself to helping others overcome challenges similar to those he faced. He volunteers monthly at the same prison where he was once incarcerated, leading 12-step meetings for inmates. Additionally, he has converted several properties in Springfield into transitional housing for individuals reentering society after prison. These efforts are deeply personal for Rock, who has experienced the devastating loss of loved ones, including his children, to drug overdoses.
“My goal is to help others avoid the fate that I’ve seen too many face,” Rock said. His story is not just one of redemption but also of giving back—a testament to the power of second chances and community support.
