How Will We Get Through These Next Four Years? By Remembering that We are Not Powerless

In times of oppression, it is vital to remember that we possess the inherent power to challenge and push back against unjust regimes. History has shown us that collective action, unwavering solidarity, and the resilience of the human spirit can dismantle even the most entrenched systems of tyranny.

As Vice President of the NAACP Springfield Chapter, I had the honor of seeing a united community on display while moderating NAACP-Springfield’s recent town hall event titled “Where Do We Go from Here? A Roadmap for A Divided Nation.” I was thrilled to see an inspiring turnout of 275 attendees, all eager to engage in meaningful dialogue about how we can move forward as a community. Our panel featured six distinguished representatives from various sectors, including the labor movement, LGBTQ+ community, immigrant advocacy, and refugee resettlement organizations. They shared invaluable insights on how collective action and solidarity are essential in addressing the challenges posed by the Trump administration.

The discussions were rich and illuminating, showcasing the vital work organizations like PROMO, Missouri Jobs with Justice, Grupo Latinoamericano, the League of Women Voters, and the International Institute are doing in the community to support our neighbors. We emphasized the importance of civic engagement, urging participants to communicate with their legislators to express their concerns and advocate for equitable policies. Additionally, we reminded everyone of the upcoming city council and school board elections on April 8, highlighting the critical need to make our voices heard by casting our votes.

I know that there are some that left the town hall without a clear sense of “what next?” In the face of overwhelming and dark national odds, it is more crucial than ever to focus locally and identify our own sphere of influence, for it is within our immediate communities and personal circles that we can exert the most meaningful impact. We can foster tangible change and cultivate a sense of hope and resilience if we all remember that we have power. We encourage our community to volunteer in our community to address social issues and support those most affected by government actions and policies.

By raising our voices, educating ourselves and others, and standing together in pursuit of justice and equality, we not only affirm our rights but also inspire future generations to continue the fight for justice. Our power lies not only in our ability to resist but also in our capacity to envision and enact a better, more equitable world. Let us harness that power and refuse to accept the status quo, for it is through our determination and courage that real change can occur. Let’s continue this momentum as we work towards a more united and just nation. Please consider joining NAACP by visiting https://naacpsgf.org/.
