Prevention & Pro-action: The Time Is Now

Our health is under threat and in danger. Now is the time to take control of our health and arm ourselves with knowledge of impending healthcare changes that are more critical than ever to our mortality. Many are facing changes in healthcare policies and systems. For Black and Brown communities, these changes may have a direct impact on health care while compounding existing disparities. With the incoming administration, We need to take control of our health and our families’ health with knowledge and action.

The Changing Healthcare Landscape
The healthcare landscape is changing. We must pay attention to healthcare policies, Medicaid and Medicare coverage changes, higher out-of-pocket costs, and denial of needed services. There are hospital and clinic closures in underserved areas that have further restricted access to quality care, disproportionately affecting communities of color.

How These Changes Affect Us
Black and Brown communities face higher rates of chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Managing these conditions becomes more complex, with limited care access leading to poorer outcomes and preventable complications.

Chronic Illness in Our Communities

Diabetes: Let’s look at some glaring statistics to understand its impact better.  African Americans are 60% more z higher diagnosis rate. Additionally, diabetes-related deaths are 50% higher for Hispanics (Office of Minority Health).

High Blood Pressure: Over 55% of African American adults live with high blood pressure. Hispanic adults, approximately 30%, have high blood pressure, with rates steadily increasing, according to the American Heart Association.

Heart Disease: Black adults are 30% more likely to die from heart disease than non-Hispanic whites. Hispanics experience issues 1.5 times related to obesity, a significant risk factor for heart disease. (National Institute on Minority and Health Disparities).

These statistics reveal a clear picture: our communities are disproportionately affected by preventable and manageable conditions.

Take Control Now

These systemic issues require systemic solutions to safeguard our health. We must take charge now for ourselves, our families, and our community.

Prioritize Prevention with regular screenings and check-ups to detect issues early to prevent complications. Seek out community clinics or low-cost programs that may be available if needed.

Make Healthier Lifestyle a Priority by adopting a balanced diet, physical activity, and lowering stress. These combinations can reduce the risk of chronic illnesses and are within anyone’s control.

Advocation and Education are crucial to understanding healthcare policies and patient rights. Knowledge empowers us to navigate the system and advocate for the quality care we need.

Find Community Resources with local programs, churches, and wellness initiatives that provide access to health education and support for success.

Here is our call to action: The changes in healthcare policies remind us of the importance of self-advocacy and community empowerment. By prioritizing prevention, making healthier lifestyle choices, and utilizing available resources, we can combat the disparities that affect our communities.

Our health is our wealth—the most valuable thing we have. Let’s take control and build a healthier future—for ourselves and future generations.
