Remembering the Springfield Walter “Duck” Major’s Classic Car Club

The legacy of Springfield inventor Walter “Duck” Major lives on, at least in spirit, through the Walter Major’s Classic Car Club. Founded in 1983 by Abraham Clark, the club aimed to honor Major’s pioneering work in automotive history. The Springfield native is credited with building the city’s first gas-powered automobile.

To celebrate Major’s contribution, the club hosted car shows at various locations around Springfield, including Silver Springs Park. However, despite the enthusiasm of its founding members, the club faced challenges and ultimately disbanded after about three years due to waning participation.

“While we welcomed everyone to join, we simply couldn’t sustain the club,” said Clark, reflecting on the group’s history.
