On March 28, nearly a hundred people gathered for the NAACP Springfield 5th Annual Women’s History Celebration, creating an atmosphere that felt both respectful and genuine. The event was held at the National Avenue Christian Church.
This year’s theme, “Rising Together, Because of Her, We Can,” was reflected throughout the program. It showed up in the way people listened, supported one another, and recognized the impact of women in the community.
Kai Sutton opened the event with welcoming remarks that set a thoughtful tone. Host Tylinia Smith guided the program smoothly, keeping the audience engaged as each part of the program unfolded.
One of the more serious moments came during remarks from Selina West, who spoke on sexual violence prevention and response. Her message was direct and important, offering a reminder of the work still needed in the community. The program also included a poem by Quinta Williams, which added a personal and reflective element to the event.
Remarks from Pastor Tracey and Dr. Zipporah Burns focused on the importance of both faith and health in strengthening communities. Crysta’l Omodehinde followed with an inspirational message that encouraged continued perseverance and unity.
The highlight of the afternoon was the recognition of this year’s honorees. Dr. Amanda Snead, Leslie Hardin, Renee Starks-High, Denise Weaver, Quinci Williams, and Tara Lacio were each recognized for their contributions and leadership. As they were introduced, the audience responded with steady applause, reflecting the respect they have earned through their work.
The event concluded with award presentations and photos, giving attendees a chance to celebrate the honorees and connect with one another.
A quote from Harriet Tubman included in the program captured the spirit of the day: “I always told God, I’m going to hold steady on You, and you’ve got to see me through.”
It was a reminder that the progress being recognized is built on persistence—and that the work continues.
