Now that the Democratic Party has flipped both chambers of Congress in its favor, its voters are waiting to see what it will do next. They ran on affordability and healthcare, but will they be successful in driving costs down and making sure people aren’t in danger of becoming destitute every time they suffer a serious ailment?

But voters are also waiting to see accountability for what has been the most observably corrupt administration in most of our lifetimes. Will congressional Democrats push for investigations into the out-of-control lawfare President Donald Trump has waged against his many political rivals, albeit unsuccessfully? Will the president and his accomplices in the Justice Department see the inside of a courtroom for how they abused their power against elected officials, former officials, and civilians alike? Will Trump be made to answer for the way he has demonstrably used his position to enrich himself or settle lawsuits filed against the branch of government he runs, granting himself and his family immunity from prosecution? How about the administration’s violent and chaotic immigration enforcement and its many attempts at election interference? (Again, unsuccessful attempts, but still.)

I mean, the U.S. military killed nearly 200 schoolchildren when it blew up an elementary school in Iran. I don’t think it’s so wild and unreasonable to say somebody should probably go to prison for that.

Well, at least one top Democrat seems confident those civil and criminal investigations will, indeed, happen. In fact, Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia, who is set to become the next chair of the House oversight committee, has two words for Republicans and the Trump administration on Tuesday: “lawyer up.”

I’m just going to go ahead and leave this here for dramatic effect.

“Today, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement after Democrats secured a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives,” House Democrats wrote in a statement. “Following this win, Garcia will become Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, where he has vowed to take on the Trump Crime Family, corporate corruption, DHS and ICE abuses, and the cover-up of the Epstein files.”

Earlier this month, a Strength In Numbers/Verasight poll found that a strong majority of voters wanted the incoming Congress to undo Trump’s agenda regarding tariffs and trade, health care and immigration, and to serve as a check on his power. And while that doesn’t necessarily translate to those voters wanting the MAGA regime prosecuted, many online have been saying for some time now that that’s exactly what they expect if Democrats gained power.

Meanwhile, establishment Democrats like Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries appear to be trying to downplay the calls for Trump’s impeachment and his administration’s legal reckoning.

“I haven’t had a single member of the House Democratic caucus talk to me about impeachment,” Jeffries told reporters on Wednesday. “We’ve been relentlessly focused on affordability and accountability.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, Schumer and other party leaders said Wednesday that they’re going to hit the administration with subpoenas and hearings, but their top priority is still fixing Trump’s economy.

“We are going to work hard to drive costs down with the president or without him, period,” Schumer said.

And while that’s all well and good, a lot of us are chanting “lock them up,” just like Republicans do when they’re on offense, only Democrats have actual observable offenses they can seek action on. This ain’t no “Hillary’s emails” or “Ilhan Omar married her brother” kind of nonsense.

Let’s get to it.
