Movie Alert: “Black Panther”

By Lyle Foster, Unite Contributing Writer

Hahaha!…..Maybe you can feel the giddiness or the excitement but let me tell you the buzz is in the streets for the first black superhero……and you have to love the fact that black is in the name of the hero!

I am sure many of you like me grew up with the comic books and of course, the TV shows and later the movie installments of all of your favorite super heroes and well yes they were all white.  This is not a prejudicial statement but rather a reality of what our experience was.  I would imagine that more than a few of you thought back to those days and wondered if we would ever have a superhero that looks like us.  It was almost as distressing as waiting for a United States president that looked like us and we finally got one….and well our other prayer has been answered, as Black Panther will burst on the scene on February 16.  Well yes, just in time for African-American heritage month we get to see our super hero all calm collected and with a room full of swagger.

No we have not seen it yet but I can tell you that the press and the anticipation is palpable as folks are planning screening parties and going in groups and have it in their calendar to see it more than once.  The previews and trailers have been rock solid and do you mind if I say it; the film has a whole lot of folks of color, as you know Black Panther has an alter ego that is a ruler of an advanced African nation by day.  Yes an African nation so that means you will get to see a lot of folks and a lot of cultural portrayals so it is going to be on y ’all.  I hope they don’t throw me out for talking back and acting as if I have lost my mind.  However, if y ‘all see me just remember we have been waiting a long time for this and so we have to show some love and support for the super hero.  Of course, this is Marvel getting the credit and the money that is going to come from this film.  Yes,  I predict it will be highly successful and unless we have a February Midwest blizzard or an East Coast N’easter we will be out in mass to check it out

Now what folks are saying is that in some ways this is a natural and somewhat expected evolution of black heroes since the days of the Blackploitation movies….some of you are too young to even know what they were but those were the closest we had to superheroes in the past and we had to work with what they gave us.  Lift your hands if you remember Shaft, Cleopatra Jones, the Mack, Super Fly and Foxy Brown.  I am almost laughing as I write this but they were real movies and they had an element of heroic to them as they were larger than life and we got so excited to see them and established a place in Black movie history for this genre of film.

Finally, the list of actors is too numerous to name but suffice it to say that a lot of your favorites will be on the big screen and everyone should be happy.  Well, okay I will mention a few.  How about Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Florence Kasumba and Forest Whitaker (and many others)!

So this it the teaser column but in the meantime support your local movie house and get in the habit for 2018. A blessed new year to everyone!
