You know what’s funny about President Donald Trump? He’s a man with a gigantic ego, who is observably obsessed with how he’s perceived by the general public, and while that obsession never influences him to — oh, I don’t know — be a half-decent human being for even a millisecond of his life, it does influence his day-to-day and even hour-to-hour decisions, making him an annoying person for a simple news writer like myself to keep up with.
So, earlier Friday, it was reported that Trump had canceled his campaign stops in Kansas and Iowa this weekend, and he was planning to attend a number of his remaining rallies by phone.
And I had written a whole thing about it; about how it looked like the president had finally gotten tired of running his butthole-shaped mouth on the Republican campaign trail. But soon after I had turned the draft in to my editor, news outlets began breaking the news that Trump changed his mind, and would be making those appearances in both states after all. As the Associated Press put it, “The scheduling whiplash underscored the chaotic and shifting nature of the final days of the midterm campaigns.”
In other words: when it comes to this scatterbrained president, there may be somebody at the wheel, but he’s using an old, janky version of MapQuest that keeps rerouting every five seconds, because THIS FOOL DOESN’T KNOW WHAT HE’S DOING AT ALL!
According to Reuters, he was still expected to travel to rallies in several states before Tuesday’s election, including in Florida, where he will be on Friday. Although it’s unclear what rallies he will attend in person, as MAGA Inc, a campaign funding group aligned with Trump, said on Thursday, it would host a series of “tele-rallies” with the president in at least 19 states, including Kansas and Iowa, before Election Day.
So, again, has the racist-blowhard-in-chief just gotten tired?
From Reuters:
Trump told reporters he did not “feel like I have to go to Kansas,” a Midwestern state where Senator Roger Marshall, a fellow Republican, is in an unexpectedly competitive race with Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton. “He is doing very well,” Trump said of Marshall. “We are going to have a strong Tuesday night.”
Later on Thursday, the Republican National Committee said in a statement that it would also cancel a planned rally in Iowa, home to several competitive congressional races.
The canceled in-person rallies were set for Salina, Kansas, on Saturday, and Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday.
Speaking of Reuters, a reporter from the news outlet asked Trump if he had canceled his appearances in the two states because he was “sick of traveling,” and I’m pretty sure that was one of the exchanges that prompted him to reschedule the appearances, because Trump attacked that journalist who was trying to do his job as if he had asked when he was going to put a “Saddam’s Cheesecake Factory” sign over the White House’s front door.
“You’re sick to ask me that,” Trump snapped, before going on to say, “You are disgusting. Put yourself in shape. You look like hell.”
Now, look, I don’t know the medical history of that random Reuters reporter, but I bet he hasn’t spent the last couple of months telling entire crowds of people about the lions, bears, snakes and giraffes his doctors keep making him identify during a series of cognitive exams he thinks are IQ tests. I’m just saying, if the president really feels the need to try to roast anyone, he’d do well to steer clear of jabs about anyone needing to get in shape. If you think he’s losing his war in Iran, you should see the way he goes to battle with a flight of stairs.
Trump did make an appearance in South Carolina on Thursday to campaign for Lindsey Graham’s sister, Sen. Darline Graham, but only because Republicans are panicking over the far-too-close Senate race in a state that, normally, would sooner host a new Woodstock than elect a Democrat to mow community lawns.
From MS NOW:
“It’s a f—-ing train wreck,” Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., said of the race on Wednesday. “It’s a mess.”
Mace told MS NOW that, in both public and private polling, Graham is up in some surveys and down in others, prompting concern among South Carolina Republicans.
“It’s not good,” she said.
A South Carolina GOP official who had also seen private polling on the race struck a similar note, telling MS NOW the election is “tighter than where it needs to be.”
The Republican, who requested anonymity to discuss the race without prompting backlash from the party, said the amount of capital Republicans are allocating toward South Carolina — both in dollars and in the president’s time — was jarring.
“The fact that we’re having to spend time and resources in South Carolina is wild,” the official said.
A poll from The New York Times/Siena University reported on Wednesday that Graham and Democrat Annie Andrews were tied at 48%. On Monday, former Republican Gov. David Beasley joined former Democratic Gov. Jim Hodges in officially endorsing Andrews, and on Friday, the son of South Carolina Republican Rep. Ralph Norman penned an op-ed saying he couldn’t vote for Graham and that “there is no true conservative to vote for in this election.”
Now, it’s unclear why anyone would be so sure that Trump — whose approval rating continues to drop faster than his knees during one of those aforementioned battles with stairs — will be this great political boon to Graham, but Nancy Mace seems to think it will do the trick.
“He’s going to have to drag her across the finish line,” she said. “If MAGA doesn’t show up to vote on Tuesday, she loses.”
Well, yeah, that’s exactly how voting works.
Anyway, Trump is tired, y’all. He’s probably tired of all the hecklers and trolls at his rallies. He’s clearly fatigued by his own anger at getting so consistently roasted all over social media, and by the people he hates with every fiber of his being, such as “Barack HUSSEIN Obama.”
And he must be tired of hearing about how unpopular he is, because even when he complains about how low the media says his approval ratings are, he has to inflate the number he says is a lie.
“‘Donald Trump is at 42%.’ You mean times 2 and add 20? I don’t even believe they send out pollsters…They sit behind the desk. ‘All right, I’m doing a poll on Trump’s popularity. Let’s say, all right, let’s make him 42. That’s right. That’s right, 42’…I see polls come out every day, polls, polls, polls,” he ranted during the SC rally.
Sir, I’m going to hold your old, spotty, decrepit hand when I say this: the most generous polls out right now have you between 31% and 37% approval.
Yeah — y’all let that man get some sleep. He’s clearly not getting enough during press conferences at the Oval Office.
Sad.
